The purpose of World Nature Conservation Day, which is observed on July 28 each year, is to raise public awareness of the value and relevance of natural resources. The depletion of natural resources caused by the growth in the human population has reached extremely alarming levels. Humans present a number of environmental problems, including global warming, pollution, the extinction of plant and animal life, and deforestation. Because nothing is everlasting, we must cease misusing natural resources now before it is too late for our children and grandchildren to have access to vital natural resources.

We are currently in a drought emergency. Read below on tips for conserving water, and how you can help California through this drought.

• Don’t let the water run while brushing teeth, shaving, or washing hands/face. This can save more than 100 gallons a week.
• Run the dishwasher only when you have a full load. Automatic dishwashers use about 15 gallons per load.
• Use a bowl of water to clean and prepare vegetables rather than letting the faucet run
• Avoid running water to thaw food. Place food in refrigerator overnight or defrost in the microwave.
• If washing dishes by hand, don’t let water run continuously for rinsing. If you have 2 sinks, fill one with rinse water. If you have only one sink, first gather all your washed dishes in a dish rack, and then rinse them quickly. Also, using the least amount of detergent necessary minimizes the rinse water needed.
• Just remember, every drop counts, let's make a difference!

In 1984, October was designated as Crime Prevention Month through a Presidential proclamation. Since then, NCPC has been working with local law enforcement, government agencies, civic groups, schools, businesses, and other organizations to help them spread the word about crime prevention and personal safety. With shrinking law enforcement budgets across the country, the role that each of us can play in preventing crime is more important than ever.
